The United States Department of Justice has released thousands of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, revealing further details about the close ties between Epstein and former Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan. These documents, made public under a law passed last year, represent the largest volume of records released so far by the U.S. government concerning Epstein and his associates.
The newly released information shows that, beyond Epstein’s personal relationship with Dr. Waheed, Waheed’s son, Jeffrey Salim, was also involved in interactions that included introducing people to Epstein, with communications occurring among three parties. Emails sent by Dr. Waheed to Epstein indicate that he was communicating directly with Epstein without intermediaries.
It has also been revealed that during Waheed’s presidency — which itself remains controversial due to allegations that he came to power through a coup — the Waheed administration sent Epstein the well-known CoNI (Commission of National Inquiry) report in an apparent attempt to present Waheed’s assumption of power in a different light. Following receipt of the report, Epstein forwarded it to his legal team for review.
One email sent to Epstein states:
“I have reviewed and studied the CoNI report you sent. I have now completed that. In addition, while in Boston, I have also carried out some additional research related to the current situation in the Maldives that needs to be addressed.”
Other emails revealed show that Waheed was preparing to contest the presidential election and seeking assistance in that effort. The emails also discuss business dealings related to resort islands.
Despite these revelations about the connections between Epstein and Dr. Waheed, President Muizzu has appointed former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan as his Special Envoy. Although the links between Epstein and Waheed are now public, the government has so far taken no action against Waheed.
Dr. Waheed continues to represent the Maldives at international platforms and business forums
